Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh is one of the largest National Parks and Tiger Reserves in India and it is also known as Kanha Tiger Reserve, Kanha-Kisli National Park.
Initially Kanha was established in 1933 as a wildlife sanctuary, but it was formed to a National Park in 1955. Later it became an important Tiger Reserve in 1974. Currently the total area of this National Park is 940 Square Kilometre, but it was a tough project for the Indian Government to make this park a Tiger Reserve due to reliance of tribal people to the forest. Baiga Tribal people had lived in many villages which are located within the area of Kanha, so resettling them had been a challenge. However, it was possible to make corridors for tigers for tigers and other animals to enhance wildlife and the population of tiger.
Wildlife in Kanha : Kanha National Park and Tiger Reserve is one of the tiger densed forests in India along with a great biodiversity of other animals as leopard, barasingha, wild dog and a wide variety of birds as Indian roller, Malabar pied hornbill, woodpecker, Indian peafowl, white-eyed buzzard, Ibis etc.
Best season to visit : November to March
Best Possible route : Kanha National Park is 1029.4 km from Kolkata via National Highway 49. By rail one may reach Gondia or Jabalpur rail station and then Kanha is easily reachable by car. Jabalpur and Raipur airports are not much far from Kanha National Park and these are well connected to other major cities in India including Kolkata.
