Overview

Jim Corbett National Park is the first Tiger Reserve initiative in India, acknowledged in 1973 by the Government of India. It is the most aged National Park in India, situated at Nainital & Pauri Garhwal districts in Uttarakhand.

Its previous name was Hailey National Park when it was established in 1936, later it became acknowledged in the name of renowned hunter, author and naturalist Jim Corbett. This National Park is a protected area by World Wide Fund For Nature to secure Indian and Nepalese trans-border protected ecosystems on the low lands at the Himalayan foothills preserving tigers, Asian elephants and one horned rhinoes and their easy migration.

The total area of Corbett National Park is 1318.54 Square Kilometre of which 520 Square Kilometre is actual core area known as Jim Corbett National Park and rest is buffer area known as Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary. This Natural Park is geographically very significant too, consisting Ramnagar riverine belt, foothills, ridges, deep forest and grass land as well.

Wildlife in Corbett :  Corbett National Park is a very moist dense forest, being the reason of an ideal habitat of tigers, specially Bengal tigers. Leopards are also found here. Ramnagar river and wide variety of large & small plats have created a great biodiversity including deer, various cats, otters, herds of Indian elephants, crocodiles, Indian pythons etc.

Best season to visit :  November to February.

Best possible route :  Corbett National Park is approx 1403 km from Kolkata via Asian Highway 1. Patnagar city and Dehra Dun are near to Corbett National Park, both these cities are connected to other major cities in India including Kolkata by flight. Reaching Dehra Dun by rail is also a good option. By rail, one may reach Kathgodam too, then by car or bus Corbett is easily reachable.
